Our Community Investment Program (CIP) is designed to work in partnership with the Central Provincial Government (CPG) through its Ward Development Committee (WDC) to support and work with project impacted communities. We aim to develop partnerships to implement meaningful and sustainable community projects.
We set out to ensure that ownership of any community projects remains with the government and the impacted communities. We tailor community project and development initiatives to mitigate any social impacts that the Port Moresby Power Station might bring about, and we ensure to always engage the communities in the design of community programs.
The key to successfully implementing our CIP:
Knowing and understanding our community and their aspirations by maintaining continuous community engagement meetings and dialogue and conducting needs surveys in target villages and working closely and meaningfully with the host government.
Work in partnership with the Ward Development Committees and be consistent with the District Development Plans to realize these aspirations.
Avoid duplication.
All community projects will be implemented within the POM Power project development foot print, Hiri Rural Local Level Government within the Hiri Koiari District. The surrounding villages are all accessible by road.
Consistent with the Hiri Koiari District Development Plans, NiuPower’s priority areas of investment are:
Target villages in the project area and particularly women. Aim is to conduct skills training for women in sewing cooking, baking and & vegetable farming. It is also aimed to train women on Financial Literacy at the back of each skill training course through BSP. Funding will go towards meeting the cost of specialist trainers.
A one-off program where various items like basic sporting equipment, sewing machines, medical equipment, schools office equipment & library books are donated to schools and organization with whom we interact. Funding will go towards purchase of such items. This is a discretionary gesture not consistent with any program.
Target villages in the project area and particularly women. Set up model vegetable farms/nurseries central for interested farmers to use as a demonstration/training farm. Farming cassava. Priority to be given to the house hold to sustain the family who is reliant on rice as staple diet. Any surplus will be sold to local markets. Funding will go towards meeting the cost of trainers
Education assistance is focused on supporting schools in the project community with library books for lower grades
NiuPower will continue to support rugby league and netball in Central’s Hiri West as part of its Community Investment Program.
During the launch of Hiri West’s first netball tournament on Tuesday, NiuPower community affairs manager Wellington Bellawa said rugby league and netball were the most popular sports in the area.
