Whenever I feel that I am adding value and see the final outcome, it makes me enjoy the job even more says electrical engineer Ellice Tamlele. Ellice works as an electrical engineer with NiuPower Limited. She was formerly employed by Puma Energy PNG Refining Limited. She is from New Ireland and East New Britain Province.

Her current employer NiuPower Limited, a joint venture of Oil Search and Kumul Petroleum Holdings, focuses on converting gas into electricity for domestic use. NiuPower owns the newly build 58 Mega Watts (MW) Port Moresby Power Station opposite the current LNG plant.

Ellice says as an electrical and operations engineer she works within the site based operations and maintenance team to develop the full suite of skills and familiarize with all aspects of technical operations and maintenance of the Port Moresby power station through shadowing key members of O&M contractor’s technical team.

She said from time to time, the role includes also second men into line duties within the O&M contractor’s team as part of learning and development. Further, non-technical duties involved in such as participation in NiuPower budgeting and planning process as well as representing NiuPower in external and industry forums as directed.

She also ensures Company policies and procedures are adhered to, business deadlines are met whilst conforming to best industry practice and above all, ensure there is no harm to people or the environment as is the first priority in all things.

“My typical day starts as I get up early and try to get to work before the start time. Plan my day, and make sure that the most urgent work gets done first. Whenever I feel that I am adding value and see the final outcome, it makes me enjoy the job even more,” she said.

Ellice said electrical engineering is tough but also rewarding. “Though it is a male dominated field we all can do it if we can manage our time and put our efforts into our studies to achieve what we dreamt of. Though it is risky at times, you have to think first, assess your working area and execute your task and remember that learning never stop,” she added.
